Unilever has suspended purchasing palm oil from Sawit Sumbermas Sarana (SSMS) due to its recent deforestation and peatland clearance.
Completing its switch to 100% certified sustainable palm oil and palm oil derivatives for its global emulsifier production, the company has fulfilled its pledge to convert all of its palm-based raw materials to certified sources by the end of 2015.
When 40 percent of the world’s palm and palm kernel oil are produced by smallholders, the question of sustainability arises. Projects to support smallholders can improve their productivity and secure a sustainable supply chain.
