Taking Active Nutrition Further With Performance Peptides

Whether it’s about managing nutrient deficiencies, improving their performance or staying healthy, almost half of the world’s athletic population uses dietary supplements, including collagen peptides. This widespread use of sports nutrition products has led to the need for an authoritative consensus opinion on the practical use of dietary supplements by athletes.

To this end, the IOC (International Olympic Committee) recently stated that collagen helps training athletes by improving their ability to exercise hard, preventing injuries and/or accelerating return-to-play and avoiding situations that might limit their performance. The IOC concluded that only a few of the many thousands of currently available products actually provide performance or health-related benefits on a situation-specific basis.

And, in this milestone opinion, collagen has been recognised among the very few supplements that support the health and performance of athletes. A range of 5 – 15 g per day of collagen was suggested by the IOC, based on the different efficacies observed in studies that used a specific bioactive collagen peptide or a generic collagen hydrolysate. The opinion cited the research developed with GELITA’s Bioactive Collagen Peptides.

Performance Peptides

Acting on the whole musculoskeletal system, individual, very specific Bioactive Collagen Peptides are highly suitable for functional sports bars, beverages or functional foods. One is designed to increase the strength and flexibility of ligaments and tendons, helping to stabilise the musculoskeletal system and decrease the incidence of injury. Another bioactive component is proven to stimulate joint cartilage regeneration. Yet another contributes to bone health by promoting the biosynthesis of the extracellular bone matrix and, finally, there are peptides that contribute to body toning by helping to increase muscle mass, decrease body fat and increase strength.

Tendon Support

Among the many aches and pains suffered by both amateur and professional athletes, soft tissue injuries of the muscles, tendons and ligaments are extremely common. Strong tendons, derived from their intact composition of extracellular matrix collagens, proteoglycans and elastic fibers, deliver strength, power and speed. GELITA’s TENDOFORTE contributes to both performance and a faster return-to-training after exercise. It can also act as a nutritional intervention for tendon and ligament problems in overuse injuries, helping athletes to get back to their former performance levels quicker and more safely.

To cite some academic evidence, research data has shown that specific Bioactive Collagen Peptides stimulate the RNA-expression and biosynthesis of collagen, proteoglycans and elastin in Achilles tendons, and that the oral ingestion of specific collagen peptides improves the extension properties of finger joints. An Australian study showed that subjects with long-term symptoms of chronic Achilles tendinopathy were able to return to running within 3 months when supplementing with these peptides and were able to keep running for the remainder of the trial period.

Stiff And Painful Joints

Tendons aren’t the only body part that might keep active people out of action. Because of increasing longevity, being overweight or the mechanical stress of intensive sport, more than 25 percent of the global population suffers from joint problems. The principal reason for these problems is wear and tear of the joint cartilage. Although there is still no cure for osteoarthritis, FORTIGEL can help. Comprising optimised collagen peptides that have been scientifically proven to stimulate the regeneration of cartilage tissue in the joints, oral administration of these peptides stimulates the cartilage cells to increase the production of both collagen and proteoglycans—the two major components of cartilage dry mass.

A Penn State University study tested the effect of CH-Alpha, which contains FORTIGEL, on sports students who were suffering from mechanical stress-based joint problems. Compared with the control group, the students who took collagen peptides showed significantly reduced joint symptoms and improved mobility. Previously, similar findings had been recorded in an observational study on active sportspeople at the Rhein-Rhur Olympic Support Center in Germany.

Quicker Results, More Motivation

Collagen peptides also enable active people to achieve quicker results, which keeps them motivated and passionate about sports. GELITA has recently investigated the effects of specific collagen peptides on body composition and toning in younger and middle-aged adults. In the randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, the effect of post-exercise collagen peptide supplementation on fat-free body mass, fat mass and muscle strength in combination with resistance training was tested: 114 healthy, less sporty men (aged 30 – 60) were treated with 15 g of BODYBALANCE collagen peptides per day for 12 weeks. The primary endpoint of the study revealed a statistically significant increase in fat-free mass after collagen peptide supplementation compared with the placebo, as well as improved muscle strength and reduced waist circumference.

GELITA has a range of collagen peptides that are completely safe, non-allergenic, free from E-numbers and, owing to their bioactive qualities, offer optimal properties for the supplementation to sportspeople.
